Gain an insight into our company and our fields of activity.
Hartmann Valves GmbH is a leading manufacturer of ball valves, wellhead flanges, and Kelly valves with a worldwide presence. Decades of experience in oil, natural gas, petrochemicals, power plant technology, and storage technology are now being used to advance heat production through deep geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and lithium production, contributing to the baseload-capable use of renewable energies.
Hartmann Valves stands for quality and innovation and is known for its advanced product developments, from initial ball valve patents to customized high-performance valves and wellheads for demanding conditions. The company focuses on customer-specific development and manufacturing. The design, assembly, and testing of the products are carried out exclusively in the German plants in Celle and Burgdorf-Ehlershausen. Hartmann Valves maintains an active dialogue with its customers and is considered a competent partner with its many years of experience.

Starting as a small engineering office in the post-war period, Hartmann Valves has grown into a globally active system provider with 230 employees and has been family-owned for three generations.
The keys to success, then as now, are innovative product developments: from the first ball valve patents to customized high-performance valves and wellheads for demanding conditions. On January 1, 2018, brothers Werner, Christian, and Martin Hartmann took over the management of Hartmann Valves GmbH.
A history shaped by responsibility, quality, and growth.
After completing his mechanical engineering studies at the Technical University of Hanover, Dipl.-Ing. Werner Hartmann was employed as a scientific assistant at the Reich Institute for mineral oil research and was also directly involved in activities immediately after the war.
The company Dipl. Ing. Werner Hartmann KG now focuses on the production of gate valves for the oil and gas industry. These are already being manufactured in large quantities and successfully marketed. To improve machine utilization and due to the very high demand for Hartmann products, work is carried out in several shifts.
A newly built hall in Ehlershausen and new, more modern machines open up new paths in production. The workforce now includes 7 employees, including a workshop foreman. The product range has been expanded to include valves with a cylindrical ball plug. Due to the constantly growing demand and the resulting excellent order situation, contract work is already being awarded to external companies.
By now these are being produced, successfully tested, and sold worldwide. Somewhat later the newly developed type S valves are successfully introduced into the Brazilian market besides the established type U valves. Production is running in top gear in a multi-shift operation.
Submission and granting of the patent for the ball valve in Germany, Austria, and the USA (Dipl. Ing. Werner Hartmann Senior)
25-year valid license agreement with Borsig from Berlin: Hartmann builds ball valves up to size 6″ with Borsig ball valves larger than 6″.
The Dipl. Ing. Werner Hartmann KG company starts a joint venture with the location Salvador da Bahia/Brazil. The deployment of Montfort automatic machines makes the production of type S valves in large item numbers for the Brazilian market possible.
Founding of Borsig Hartmann Valve Ltd. in Canada with the start of production in 1977.
Development of the asymmetrical sealing ball valve. This design makes it possible to produce valves that are “fire safe”. These valves still have a defined base function after being exposed to fire for a certain period of time. The new design replaced the old Type S. As a strategic consequence, the Brazilian joint venture is handed over to the local partner.
The pure metallic sealing ball valve is developed. This will achieve zero bubble tightness (leak rate 0). Worldwide standards are being set to this day and Hartmann is occupying a pioneering role.
The license agreement with Borsig is terminated. From 1991/92, independent national and international marketing begins under the management of authorized signatory Wolfgang Genannt.
The company employs nearly 20 people at that time.
Portfolio expansion through scraper valves, which replace complex pig trap systems and allow continued operation of the conveying line.
At the beginning of 1997, the Maschinenfabrik in Celle was merged into CM Hartmann GmbH. Within the same year, a new, larger location was found for the resulting overall company. With the takeover of Bogema (previously Bomag), both the location and additional employees were integrated into the company. In order to focus on the wellhead business, the drilling rig division was spun off.
Development of the Twin Ball Valve (TBV), which constitutes a double shut-off within the overall length of a standard valve.
Numerous projects have been realized since the 2000s, particularly in deep geothermal energy.
The picture above shows the wellhead in Bruchsal, which was installed in 1978 and reactivated in 2002.
With Hartmann Technology GmbH in Ettlingen, complete solutions for the Asian market can now be offered.
Wellhead components from CM-HARTMANN GmbH, ball valves from Dipl. Ing. Werner Hartmann KG. Two companies, one complete product: the HARTMANN wellhead. To address this, the operating units of CM-Hartmann and Dipl. Ing. Werner Hartmann KG were merged into HARTMANN VALVES GmbH. This allows customers to be served from one location. Hartmann Valves GmbH now employs approximately 100 people at the two locations in Celle and Ehlershausen.
Ute Hartmann takes over Hartmann Valves GmbH and succeeds Manfred Pilchowski in the management in 2011.
The purchase of the adjacent property (formerly Furtex) created the opportunity to expand production capacities in incremental steps and to establish the entire company at the Celle site in the medium term.
Carsten Braun takes over the executive management from Wolfgang Genannt.
The three eldest sons join the family business: Werner Hartmann as Sales Manager, Christian Hartmann as Purchasing Manager, and Martin Hartmann as Project Engineer.
The company celebrates its 70th anniversary: with an international customer forum, an open house day, and a large celebration for all employees.
Werner, Christian, and Martin Hartmann take over the management in the third generation.
The business association DIE FAMILIENUNTERNEHMER of the Hanover regional district honors the management for outstanding entrepreneurship and employee-oriented leadership.
The award was given to Werner Hartmann, who is leading the family-owned enterprise Hartmann Valves together with his brothers Christian and Martin Hartmann as the third generation.
The research and development department is spun off from the operational design department.
Expansion of the portfolio in the field of renewable energies. Future-proof for hydrogen: Hartmann offers ball valves, wellheads, as well as corresponding material suitability and leak tests.
The company has 200 employees and celebrates its 75th anniversary under the motto “Together Towards the Future”.
The new Hartmann pig ball valve with multiple safety barriers, submitted for patent, wins the Primus Award in the VALVE category. The award was presented during DIAM 2021 in Bochum.
Portfolio expansion through market entry in the field of Kelly Valves, which enable safe drilling and production operations.
Ball valve with integrated heating jacket
Development of a special ball valve solution with an integrated heating jacket for the safe transport and regulation of temperature-sensitive media.
API 6A Rental Valves
Expansion of the service portfolio to include rental equipment for API 6A valves and flexible solutions for time-critical applications.
Organisation of the first Renewable Energy Summit
With the first Renewable Energy Summit at the CD-Kaserne Celle, Hartmann Valves brought together representatives from business, science, and politics. The focus was on the future topics of deep geothermal energy and hydrogen, as well as the exchange on innovative energy solutions.
Entry into CCS and CCU applications
Expansion of industry expertise in the field of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) and development of valve solutions for the safe storage and use of CO₂.
Hartmann Valves opens new service location in southern Germany
Hartmann Valves GmbH is expanding its presence in the rapidly growing geothermal market in southern Germany and opening a new service location in Mengkofen, near the A92 near Dingolfing.
80 Years of Hartmann Valves
Hartmann Valves celebrates its 80th anniversary under the motto “You don’t make it to 80 alone.” Over three anniversary days, this special milestone is celebrated together with customers and business partners at the Customer Forum, with employees at an internal anniversary celebration, and with numerous guests at the Open Day.
With our locations, we are close to our customers and markets. From here, we develop, manufacture, and deliver valve solutions for demanding applications worldwide.
