Kelly valve

Shut-off valves for safe drilling and production processes

Kelly valves serve as safety valves in drilling rigs. The use of the Kelly valve allows for the interruption of the media flow inside the drill string. Depending on the requirements, we supply our Kelly valves with various overall lengths, outer and inner diameters, and thread types.

Thanks to their robust design, certified safety, and long service life, our special valves are a reliable solution for your plant.

Customized design

Individually manufactured for your processes

As drill string valves, Kelly valves provide reliable protection during pressure increases or kick situations. By moving the ball to the closed position, the metal-to-metal sealing system reliably prevents the outflow of the medium.

The valves are designed for a wide temperature range from
-46°C to +180°C (L/X), Class 2 according to API 7-1, and are characterized by durability, resistance, and the ability to operate at full differential pressure.
The Kelly valves are supplied for applications up to 10,000 psi and 15,000 psi, making them suitable for demanding high-pressure applications in the drill string.

FAQ

A Kelly valve serves as a safety shut-off in the drill string. In the event of a pressure increase (‘kick’), the media flow can be safely interrupted by the metal-seated ball. This reliably prevents the outflow of hazardous media and ensures the operational safety of the drilling rig.

Hartmann Valves Kelly valves are designed for a temperature range of -46°C to +180°C (L/X). This makes them suitable for both arctic environments and high-temperature drilling – with consistently reliable sealing and resistance to pressure differences.

Three versions are available:
Single Shaft, Double Shaft, and Twin Ball Quad Shaft.
All variants are optionally available with a Pin × Box thread connection and combine a compact design with high functional reliability.

Manufacturing is carried out according to API Specification 7-1 and under ISO 9001:2015.
Optional Type Approval certification by DNV or ABS can be obtained – particularly for offshore and international applications.

Upon request, Hartmann Valves offers power-tightening (break-in) for quick installation, spare parts kits (sealing, wear parts), and comprehensive overhaul and service options. This enables efficient maintenance and high plant availability.
